Information security is regarded as fundamental to the successful exchange of information with our clients and other stakeholders. Our clients, other stakeholders and we ourselves must be assured that information meets the required levels of confidentiality, integrity and availability.

Circular design and development

We aim to connect and empower municipalities, companies, research institutions and entrepreneurs who all have an interest in developing the circular economy together, because of the huge opportunities in enhancing the economy, employment and the environment. We do so in the programme for Circular Economy, for which the Dutch government asked five partners, led by Royal HaskoningDHV and Cirkellab, to develop a method to analyse and identify concrete opportunities. An integrated toolbox has been developed to help municipalities make the transition to a circular economy. This toolbox is continuously updated and further developed. In various projects, together with our customers and stakeholders, we have successfully implemented the closing
of cycles (water, energy and raw materials) and optimizing the water chain to facilitate the transition to a circular economy to stimulate the water cycle.

We aim to create as many circular initiatives as possible. We do so by identifying new projects, bringing parties together and also by actively implementing projects for our clients. We execute such projects on a local, regional and national level.

The independent Stichting Eerlijk Buitenleven is the supervisor of the procedure. NL Greenlabel helps to make sustainable ambitions measurable and to actually achieve a demonstrably healthy living, working and living environment in which greenery and sustainability are central. Royal HaskoningDHV also supports NL Greenlabel and the foundation with the further development of NL Area Label (Gebiedslabel) : The NL Area Label helps governments, housing corporations and architects to convert ambitions for a future-proof living environment into concrete measurable goals.
See the website: http://www.nlgreenlabel.nl/homepage/nlgreenlabel/

Thanks to the NL Greenlabel methods that Royal HaskoningDHV has co-developed, sustainable products and projects can be selected quickly and well-founded. Both methods are suitable for companies that want to have their product or company site assessed for integral sustainability. But also governments that from now on only want to develop sustainable outdoor space or simply want to put it to the test whether their plans for the redevelopment of a neighborhood, park or road are really sustainable.

We are proud to be part of an extensive partner network of more than 180 partners that all agree with the mission to make the living environment greener and more sustainable. Projects that we took part in are listed on the NL Greenlabel website. Completed projects in 2020 en 2021, provided with an area label and in which Royal HaskoningDHV has contributed are:
1. NL Area label for Maanwijk Leusden-Zuid. Film certificate sharing on time frame approx. 03:04.
2. NL Area label Slingeland Hospital, Doetinchem: https://www.nlgebiedslabel.nl/nproject/slingeland-ziekenhuis-doetinchem/
3. NL Greenlabel ambassadors Liveable City - NL Greenlabel: https://nlgreenlabel.nl/ambassadeurs-levenbare-stad/; our expert Jos Schild gives one of the colleges for Liveable City (commissioned by NL Greenlabel) on the relationship between urban development and health. Nereda® Wastewater treatment technology

Nereda® is a sustainable and cost-effective biological wastewater treatment technology that purifies water using the unique features of aerobic granular biomass. Nereda plants require a quarter of the area of traditional installations; the process consumes much less energy; and it is entirely based on natural ingredients. The award-winning technology was invented by the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and developed in a public-private partnership between the University, the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA), the Dutch Water Boards and Royal HaskoningDHV. See also our website: https://www.https://www.royalhaskoningdhv.com/en-gb/nereda/about-nereda-technology

Extensive life cycle analyses reveal Nereda® as a truly sustainable technology. Compared to conventional processes, Nereda® not only has significantly lower energy consumption but also produces, commonly without use of waste generating chemicals, a remarkably high effluent quality. In addition, the technology requires less construction materials and less mechanical equipment resulting in a better environmental construction profile.
The success of Nereda is its high water treatment capability in combination with significantly lower investment and operational costs, a very small physical footprint (25%-50% compared to conventional systems) and high energy savings (20-30%). There are 89 sewage plants in operation or under construction or under design all over the world. See also our website: https://www.royalhaskoningdhv.com/en-gb/nereda And see Nereda highlights in the attached files.

Nereda® technology shows how close partnership results in a whole new era of wastewater treatment, with big advantages for people all around the world. The unique process features translate into compact,
energy saving and easy to operate Nereda® installations
for both industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

Reduction of our CO2 footprint

By 2035, Royal HaskoningDHV will have reduced the energy consumption of its approximately 75 offices around the globe by two thirds compared with today, while the only energy used will be from renewable sources. We are committed to the Dutch Green Building Council's Paris Proof initiative for a sustainable built environment. For the Dutch Green Building Council and with the support of Redevco Foundation, the organisation has calculated the potential of renewable energy per 2050. This enables DGBC to determine the energy use ration in buildings.Royal HaskoningDHV developed a dynamic Road Map for the Energy Transition in Buildings to facilitate organisations achieving their own Paris Proof goals based on this ration.
We also successfully renewed our CO2-Performance Ladder Level 5 certification (the highest level) in the Netherlands.

Offices: Reduce CO2 footprint* by 35% compared to 2016 (reduction of 61.5%)- Objective met. Reduction was mainly achieved by ongoing initiatives to switch to cleaner types of energy (wind and solar) and by reducing our number of offices.
Travel excluding flights: Reduce CO2 footprint* by 33% compared to 2016 (reduction 65.4%)- Objective met.
Flight travel: Reduce CO2 footprint* by 4% compared to 2016 (reduction 74.1%)- Objective met.

Our Dutch branch, HaskoningDHV Nederland B.V., is certified for the CO2-Performance Ladder, level 5 (highest level). This certification scheme stimulates CO2-reduction in our operations and in our projects. For more info, please visit:

SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production in our Operations added in our WPS CSR Actions & Plans

As a follow up of the Green Deal Circulair inkopen 2.0 in the Netherlands which ended on 31-12-2020 Royal HaskoningDHV continued her efforts for circularity in her own operations and circular procurement, in her follow up programme WPS CSR Actions and Plans SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production in our Operations, to contribute to the set CO2 reduction targets and continuement of ‘walk-the-talk’ in our operations.
Main focus areas are: 1 Prevent waste by asking supplier to take waste back or deliver without waste. 2 Devide waste in different waste lines. 3 Recycle waste where possible. 4 Prevent residual waste. For all offices in the Netherlands. 5. Separate waste bin in every office in the Netherlands for small electrical devices.

- Continuation of single solution to recycle all paper from our offices including paper towels and cups. This reduces logistics movements and will still be used as raw material for hygiene paper. (See our CSR Report 2020 section Sustainable facility management)
- We have developed a model to reduce waste in our offices, acting in line with the 5Rs and Lansink’s ladder.
- Sustainable reuse and recycling of ICT hardware use parter D-Two
- Sustainable office supplies 'green' articles
- Paris Proof Commitment to Sustainable Offices (energy consumption and sustainable way of heating), starting with our NL offices and ; Amsterdam and Groningen (newly opened in 2020) already comply. (See our CSR Report 2020 section Paris Proof commitment for sustainable offices)
- Our offices in Amersfoort, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Groningen will be getting their energy directly from Windpark Ferrum in IJmuiden. (See our CSR Report 2020 a.o. CO2 Performance Ladder-visual end)

Social return (SROI) - Procurement

We obtained in 2021 the PSO-certification Aspirant. We have a plan to continue to move up the ladder. In contracts for outsourced services, such as garden maintenance, cleaning and catering, we require a percentage of the personnel hours to be deployed by people who are habitually excluded from the labour market due to low educational achievement, language barriers or other occupational disabilities. Our social return on investment (SROI) was less for catering in 2020 because of Covid-19. However, for office health and hygiene, we arranged for additional guidance to be provided in the necessary ways of working so these contracts could continue safely and at the required quality levels. In contracts for products, we prefer to choose suppliers working with employees who are habitually excluded from the labour market. This has been successful for recycling old and broken IT devices, mail sorting and furniture supplies.

Information based/calculated with the PSO calculation tool:
Employees from different SR target groups represent 0.5% of our total FTE of 3083 (average over 2021)
Relevant target groups are:
- WAO/WIA/WAZ
- Wajong
- BBL/BOL
- WW

Employees of other service providers in which employees from the SROI target groups work represent a value that corresponds to 0.3% of our number of FTE of 3083
These services concern:
- Cleaning
- Greenery maintenance
- Other

SDG-17; SDG 8; We strive for lasting relationships with reliable partners and have high expectations from our suppliers. Suppliers may expect a clear, transparent and honest attitude from us and must comply with our Business Principles for our Partners and Suppliers. We aim for our suppliers to work as sustainably as possible, which can be in reflected in the product and in aspects of the organisation. Other examples of our contribution to sustainability are Community Engagement, Circular Economy and Social Return.

Support Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)

We value diversity of thought as this will bring better results for our clients and society. We believe in the potential of people and we aim to unlock their full potential as individuals and as teams. For us, diversity is not the goal of itself, but rather, a way to reach our goals. Having diversity of thought and bringing different perspectives to the table is important in creating an accomplished, successful and sustainable business. We are committed to providing a safe and enriching work environment for all. One that allows individual skills, strengths, and perspectives to be heard, used, and amplified, regardless gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, or physical ability. We strive for a collaborative, equal environment where everyone feels comfortable bringing their true selves to work. We also encourage a mindset among our leaders that a diverse team makes an important contribution to the successful delivery of business ambitions.

In 2021 2 Mentorship programmes were launched, one in UK and one in Vietnam. Following our success in 2020 for the European Women in Construction and Engineering awards with one winner, in 2021 we had 2 finalists. We partnered with the Diverse Sustainability Initiative (DSI) in the UK and Women in Engineering and Science (WISE) with a global reach.

Cecelia Harvey is our dedicated global equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) lead, and heads a network of EDI ambassadors to ensure consistency of implementation of EDI practices, while taking local knowledge, cultural differences and political and socio-economic considerations into account. Employee networks for disability, LGBTQ+ and diverse ethnic backgrounds have been launched to share best practice and gain understanding of every individual’s lived experience. We are encouraging open conversations. Many of our teams received unconscious bias awareness training. We are a member of https://www.diversesustainability.net/partners

Sustainable projects and corporate responsibility (responsible and sustainable business (RSB))

Besides how we operate within our own organization, our key contribution to support sustainable development is through our projects and initiatives. Promoting sustainability and responsibility is at the heart of our work, expressed in our promise to "Enhance society together".
In every project that we execute we stimulate awareness and trigger sustainable ambitions. To do so we formulated our "4 Questions" which are posed in every (internal and external) project we take on. With the 4 Questions we ask ourselves, our clients and other stakeholders in every single project:
1.Does the output meet the requirements of most stakeholders involved?
2.Does the output serve additional added value for the client and society as a whole?
3. Is the result lasting, is it future-proof?
4. Can we meet the client’s demand while using a minimum of natural resources and energy?

Our work feels more important than ever. We are involved in activities that ensure the backbone of society keeps functioning - from the supply of clean water and food to maintaining safe environments such as cities, transport hubs, hospitals, schools, and workplaces. The resilience shown by our staff, clients and stakeholders by embracing new ways of working helped to safeguard vital services.
For some clients, RHDHV has explicitly asked those four questions. For an overview and examples see our CSR Report Responsible and Sustainable Business Update 2020 including GRI Table: https://ireports.royalhaskoningdhv.com/rsb2020/introduction-by-ceo-royal-haskoningdhv and our integrated Annual Report 2020: https://ireports.royalhaskoningdhv.com/ar2020/introduction-by-ceo-royal-haskoningdhv

Our mission to Enhance Society Together, combined with our multidisciplinary expertise across water, energy, industry and transport, puts us in an excellent position to deliver distinctive new services and solutions in response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key to our strategy is the desire to concentrate impact in areas that we master and actively influence. That is why we choose to align with the following SDGs in respect of our projects: SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 17.
